GLOBE Installation procedure

Requirements and prerequisites

GLOBE development is based on OpenGL functions, it is then necessary to have a smart GPU and you need to update your graphic drivers.

Computer configuration

  • Operating system : Windows 7, Linux Cent OS 6.3 or later , MacOS 10.4
  • System: 64 bits
  • RAM: 4Go  minimum
  • Graphic adapter: minimum 2007 – Globe has been tested on NVIDIA

Graphic drivers

Your Graphic Process Unit driver has to be up to date. Using an old version driver
can lead to a JVM crash as soon as GLOBE tries to display any OpenGL view.

NVIDIA driver for Windows

Visit the NVIDIA driver site and update your driver.

ATI driver for Windows

Visit the ATI driver site and update your driver.

NVIDIA driver for Linux

It is important to fully update your system before proceeding with the driver

Therefore, first update the system (as root):

yum update

Download the NVIDIA driver at the NVIDIA driver site.

To know which NVIDIA chip-set is used on your PC, use the lspci command.

The Nouveau driver ships with CentOS, enabled by default. It's this driver that allows
the fancy high-resolution boot splash and whatnot. If you want Nvidia, then you will
have to remove this driver first.
This can be accomplished in several ways.

yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers dkms

The quickest and simplest way is to add a small entry to the kernel line in the
GRUB /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Just append rdblacklist=nouveau and
the next time your kernel boots, it will come with the old, low-resolution Plymouth
three-color bar splash and no Nouveau.

The second, more permanent option, is to
blacklist the module is by using the /etc

/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Once the system boots, verify that the driver is not loaded:

If it does not work, type ‘a’ when the grub menu is displayed at boot, then add this line at the grub prompt :

and the press enter.

In a shell, type :

modprobe –r nouveau

Now, we need to drop to text-only console, because the driver cannot install when the graphics thingies are in use. To do this, switch into runlevel 3:

Login as root. Find the downloaded NVIDIA driver on your disk. Make the file executable and then run it. Follow the prompts provided by the NVIDIA installer text wizard.

Once this step is complete, go back into runlevel 5.

You will see Nvidia splash, which should indicate you're doing good. But just to be sure, open the NVIDIA control panel and make sure the driver is working correctly. Testing glxgears is a good idea.

GDAL is necessary to display Geotiff images.

Nothing to do, the gdal executable is included in the GLOBE Setup.

install gdal via rpm (see

CentOS 6

rpm -Uvh

yum install gdal.x86_64

CentOS 5

rpm -Uvh

yum  install gdal.x86_64

Install gdal via this dmg file:

Create a file /etc /launchd.conf with this command line:

setenv PATH /usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Programs

Installing GLOBE Software

Linux operating system

Download the GLOBE software file “”. Create a Globe directory. Unzip the zip file in it and run the command “Globe”.

You should then get the main window.

Windows operating system

Download the GLOBE software installer “GlobeSetup-1.2.7.exe” and execute it. The GLOBE software icon will be available on the desk. Click on it to open the application.

MAC operating system

Download the GLOBE software file “”. Create a Globe directory. Unzip the zip file in it and run the command “Globe”.

You should then get the main window.

NasaWorldWind’s cache

NasaWorldWind software is used as a 3D Earth viewer (GLOBE’s GeoView). For disconnected computers, a cache is available as and should be copied in C:\ProgramData\WorldWindData on Windows and $HOME/var/cache/WorldWindData or /var/cache/WorldWindData on Linux, and  /Library/Caches/WorldWindData on MacOS. After unzipping, you should get a directory called $HOME/var/cache/WorldWindData/Earth, /var/cache/WorldWindData/Earth, or /Library/Caches/WorldWindData/Earth.

Uninstall procedure

Linux and Mac operating system

Users just need to delete the GLOBE software directory to uninstall it.

Windows operating system

Users need to click on “uninstall” icon  which is available in the GLOBE program group to uninstall it.
